The 100th and final turbine that will make up the world’s largest wind farm, european energy company Vattenfalls Thanet Wind Farm was put in place today a dozen kilometers off coast line near Kent in the UK.

The project, the largest of its type in the world, is expected to supply power to more than 250,00 home in the UK. Seen as a landmark in alternative energy production, the farm will supply the households by supplying a whopping 300MW obtained from a grid of 100 Vesta wind turbines, each providing 3MW.

The success of this project will largely effect the scale of future projects and other energy companies are watching closely to assess the success (or failure) of the project, we can only hope it is indeed successful!

Take a look at the video below for more information on offshore wind farms, this particular wind farm is also one of the world’s largest and is found in Lillgrund, Sweden

Whilst this blogs focus is mainly on do it yourself solutions for solar power, building a homemade windmill is the perfect partner to help slash your power bills even further and become even more independent from the power grid.

A Homemade Windmill is another great DIY project, from which you stand to save a nice amount of money whilst helping the environment. Wind power is one of the oldest energy sources we have, its used particularly in farming can be traced back centuries.

Similar to its solar power kit cousin a homemade windmill can be assembled for around $100 with materials readily available at your local hard ware store. The process of assembling and implementing your own kit is simple and straightforward, provided you have a good instruction guide to work from (You can find the best instruction guide here)

A Homemade Windmill harness’s wind power by collecting the energy created when wind pushes across the turbines of a windmill.

You can of course buy a retail, commercial windmill but this will cost you thousands of dollars and the return on your energy bill could take months to recoup the cost.

Combining both DIY solar power and Wind power is the perfect combination, use your wind power on the days the wind is blowing and store the energy in batteries, when the wind isn’t blowing you can switch over to the solar energy you have been storing, get this right and you can forget living on the grid altogether and wave goodbye to those exorbitant power bills.

As mentioned above you need to insure you get a good instruction guide (set of plans) to ensure you build a Windmill that works, unfortunately there are some very ordinary guides out there.

Check list of what you want in your Homemade Windmill Guide

The guide must be clear and concise, written in such a way that there is no confusion.

Must be contain easy to follow diagrams of the assembly procedure.

Video Instructions are preferable, they make life so much easier.

ongoing support via email.

You want instructions that outline how to build a homemade windmill with at least 100watt output

For a guide that satisfy’s all of the above check list take a look at the following link, take a weekend off and build your own homemade windmill

There are many companies today who not only supply but will install wind generators for you. However, to be completely honest, most of these professionally installed systems are pretty expensive. If you are looking for a way to provide additional power to your home, but your budget is limited, then you should consider building a wind generator yourself.

You may not realize it, but building a wind generator yourself could end up only costing you around $100 – $200, rather than thousands and will be a very wise investment indeed. This one small investment in turn could end up saving you thousands of dollars on what you electricity bills would normally be.

Something else that you may not realize when thinking of building a wind generator yourself is that the majority of parts you need can be bought at your local hardware store or online for under $200. So thinking that getting the parts is going to be a problem is something you need not be concerned about.

However, before you do consider building your own wind generator for your home there are certain things you must think about beforehand. Below we look at what these are and if you keep them in mind then you are sure to construct one that will last for many years to come.

Tip 1: The Base – It is important that you provide the wind generator with ample support and this means constructing a sturdy base on which it canstand. Ideally, the base should be made from concrete which will allow you to ensure that the supports of your wind generator are held firmly in place no matter how strong the wind blows.

Tip 2: The Tower – You should definitely try to construct the tower from metal. However, if your budget is limited then use the thickest plywood that you possibly can. This will help to ensure that you have a sturdy tower that can cope with all types of weather conditions.

Tip 3: The Blades – You can make the blades for your wind generator yourself, but ensure that they can move easily and won’t be hindered by any other part of the construction. In fact, for those who are building a wind generator for the first time, purchasing premade quality blades will be your best option as this will ensure that they are able to create the amount of energy needed to meet one’s power requirements.

Should you decide to make your own blades you should create them using PVC or plywood. It is important that the size of the blades is in equal proportion to the size of the tower you have constructed. If you make the blades too big then the tower won’t be strong enough to hold them up, whilst if they are too small then they aren’t going to be able to return the levels of energy that you need to power your home.

Tip 4: The Gear Box – It is important that when building a wind generator you think about the kind of gearbox you are going to be building or buying. If it is of an inferior quality then you risk a chance that the blades will not turn as freely as they should and the levels of energy produced by them is going to be much less than you need.

There’s probably no need to tell you of the importance of using renewable energy sources. If people knew a little more about clean, renewable energy sources we’d demand it from our energy suppliers and we could all breathe a little easier. When we don’t pay attention to how our energy is produced, we continue to meet our needs for energy through unhealthy means which harm our environment and our bodies.

It is vital to make sure that we, as the adults, are not only learning about renewable energy but that our future generations are learning about it as well. Before you even get to the point of wondering how much electricity the wind generators produce, it is import to learn a little bit about how they work in the first place.

One thing which people worry about in connection to the use of power is failing to understand how the technology works. They may fear that in the absence of a steady wind, the turbines used will not generate power. However, it takes only the lightest breeze to produce electricity. The kinetic energy of the wind is converted into electricity and can be used to meet the energy needs of homes and businesses.

A wind generator will work best when installed on the roof of the building, as this allows it to catch more wind energy. However, it may be a good idea to have a backup supply of electrical power, so you may not want to call your local utility to disconnect just yet.

If you’re not able to get enough wind power to handle your usage, this will provide you with a failsafe system to meet your electricity needs. When there is a lot of wind to use (for instance, anytime that there are winds of more than 7 mph), then you may even be able to sell the unused energy you generate to your local utility company.

Wind power can indeed generate enough electricity for your household’s needs. If not, there is still the electrical supply from your utility company and you can either sell the surplus electricity you generate or if you have batteries for this purpose, store the extra energy for use later on.

Being able to sell this energy to the power company is a way that you will be able to earn back the money you put into installing the wind generators to begin with. The exact amount of energy that a person can expect from the use of their wind generator will simply depend on the size of generator they are using.

In an area with 12mph average wind speed, a 10kw wind generator can produce around 10,000kw annually. This is enough to meet the energy needs of the typical home. A 5-MW wind turbine, by contrast can produce upwards of 15 million kw in a year – enough to power 14,000 homes!

In the current times, there are two pertinent factors which need equal and enough attention from us. These two factors are our economy and the earth as the planet we live in. Truly, we are facing challenging issues regarding these two. There has been an increasing need regarding the environment with its continuous deterioration because of pollution, just the same as there have been growing concerns about the financial crisis that we have been experiencing causing the inflation and rise in the prices of commodities.

As a vigilant citizen who is engaged with things that are happening around him or her, it is important that you take part and do your share by taking measures on how we can better cope with these highlighted concerns. One good way of taking an active role in things is to consider alternative means of energy. What this means is to resort to wind and solar power.

Wind and solar power are alternative means of energy that are renewable. Given that they are renewable means that the uses of these energies do not pose any kind of harm to the earth. Wind and solar power have also proven to provide benefits to the planet and humans as well.

Renewable form of energy thus helps preserve the environment. One very good benefit that this offers too is the fact that it will help us save on our expensive electrical bills since we will be resorting to wind and solar power as an alternative and not the current electric companies that we have. Since they are free, then this ultimately translates to savings right away.

If you aspire to build your own wind and power system, then know that the process is relatively straightforward. Below are steps that you can take in putting up this system.

The first thing that needs to be done is to purchase a home installation power kit. There are several do it yourself wind and solar power kits which can be easily purchased in hardware stores and shops. As you choose which one to get, go for that which provides you with easy instructions to follow. Check out the prices too and make sure it fits well within your budget.

The second step that you will have to do as you have purchased the kit is to open it and look for the instructions right away. Make sure that you read this first before you even attempt to set it up. This ensures that you have truly understood the steps that need to be taken and that you are well guided in the process of the installation. Dont worry because do it yourself kits which are purchased are guaranteed to have instructions included with them.

Thirdly, be patient as you build your wind and solar power systems. It is important that you do so as it involves you really understanding what needs to be done. Dont get easily frustrated and keep your objective in mind ” which is to build a system that will help you lower the cost of your electrical bill.

Whilst the solar power solution provides the most popular form of alternative energy, wind power is becoming increasingly popular.

The combination of solar and wind power promises to provide not only free, environmentally safe forms of energy but it allows us to live a much freer lifestyle when it comes to energy consumption. No longer will you feel guilt or be berated for using too much energy! these forms of energy come from renewable sources that do not give off harmful environmental side effects.

Similar to solar power DIY kits, DIY wind power kit windmills can be built from materials found at your local hardware store for a price of around $200.

Wind power is the simple process of collecting energy formed by wind passing over turbines. Wind power alone must be looked at more as a supplement to “on grid” sources of energy, to live totally independent from the power grid would see an approach that would have to incorporate solar energy as well.

Fortunately our number one rated DIY solar power guide has a bonus of a DIY wind power guide, containing blueprints, instructions (written, illustrated and video) that take you step by step through the process of building your own wind mill.

The first alternative energy resource we will take a look at is residential wind power.

By catching the energy generated by the action of wind blowing over and as a result turning turbines an electrical generator in turn converts this action into energy in the form of current which can be stored in batteries or used as required.

Harnessing Wind Power is nothing new, in fact it is centuries old. Farmers have for years been using it in the form of windmills and one only needs to look at nay postcard image of Holland to know the countryside is dotted with them also. Whilst not strictly used to generate energy (they were used mainly for grinding grain and moving water) the idea of catching and converting wind to do work is nothing new.

Many countries have now implemented “wind farms” which are used to generate energy, both in terms of supplying the power grid and providing isolated regions off the power grid with electricity.

Wind farms have many positives, mainly it is a renewable energy source and is a environmentally friendly method for producing power. Whilst a good constant stream of wind is needed to keep the turbines moving, using batteries to store the generated energy will provide supply during times of little or no wind.

Residential wind power has now become a reality, supplementing your power usage with electricity generated by wind power will see you make drastic savings on your power bill and help save the environment.

DIY Wind Power projects (DIY = Do it Yourself) are a fun and rewarding way to not only learn more about our environment, but save you money in the process. You don’t need to be a great handyman / tradesman to build your own windmill, it can be done for under a hundred dollars and there are many good DIY residential wind power guides avaliable.

There are a number of good options available for those looking to get into DIY Residential wind power generation, the best of which I have personally found is available here DIY Residential Wind Power.
