Renewable Energy – What Can I Do?

You cannot define renewable energy that easily. It is the general term used for a whole range of unconventional energy sources, so the definition has to be all-encompassing. As most experts put it, renewable energy is any energy source that occurs naturally and very widely.

Nuclear power is the origin for most renewable energy sources. This nuclear power is the one from the sun. In a huge nuclear reaction, the sun creates energy in form of light and heat which we can use in the form of natural energy. The sun is the number one source of solar power, wind power and biomass energy. Many call fossil fuels for biomass energy but it’s limited and have several calamitous side effects.

The US federal National Renewable Energy Laboratory has a good renewable energy program that researches the latest energy-saving building techniques. Scientists have realized that energy efficiency is the way to go, and this body educates people in this aspect.

They cooperate with the leaders of the construction industry, highlight attempts to try to build using renewable energy and give information to producers as well as consumers how they can save money by using this type of energy. NREL also collaborate with agencies to set a rule of thumb for buildings and other energy consuming contrivances.

The use of renewable energy is beneficial for the our sadly polluted world. Wind and solar energy are two main types of this energy. Bio fuels, geothermal energy and wave or tidal power are fast becoming more popular in areas where they can be applied.

What is the difference between renewable and alternative energy?

Many people are not aware of the slight difference between the two. Renewable energy is essentially natural; it is the energy we can derive from the sun or wind or waves. Alternative energy, however, includes biofuels and nuclear energy sources which are not totally healthy options.

The infrastructure we have is suited for fossil fuels, even though renewable energy or green energy more cost effective. Our government has not been busy taking any steps to change things and go in for green energy sources. With the present situation worsening every day, we have to get a change really soon.

A good thing about fossil fuels is the easy way we can store the energy we get, a procedure that is more complicated with renewable or green energy sources. Solar power, for instance, is not that effective in cloudy weather. Without any wind, that source of energy cannot be made use of. This and the fact that initial costs to get energy from these unconventional sources are relatively high, have lent it a small drawback when we compare to traditional energy sources.

Rushing Rivers to provide MesoHABSIM training Courses

Technology is growing at a rapid pace and environmental science needs to stay up to par. In response to this, Rushing Rivers Institute scientists have adapted models to utilize these advances in order to better fight river destruction. The result is MesoHABSIM, a sophisticated augmentation of former habitat simulation models to help river scientists in their simulation as well as future river plans.

MesoHABSIM is designed to implement habitat modeling for not only scientific use, but businesses who are environmentally conscious as well. The MesoHABSIM model allows for planning that can accurately predict the impact of construction, development and extraction on rivers and their ecosystems. This responsible planning will not only benefit the environment, but reflect well on the organization that chooses to do so.

Because of the novelty of the technology, Rushing Rivers is offering training courses to inquiring scientists on its use and applications. These courses will be offered both in the Hadley, Massachusetts, as well as Madrid, Spain. Companies and scientists alike will be able to evaluate its effectiveness and use.

The two day introductory course is organized to teach the basics of MesoHABSIM data collection and modeling. It is designed for those who will not be utilizing the technology in the near future but are interested in having an understanding of its usage and necessity.

The four day course is intended for those who will be using MesoHABSIM in the near future for environmental research and studies. In addition to the introductory portion, participants in the course will have the opportunity to learn about data processing, as well as training in Sim-Stream software as well.

Both of these courses involve hands-on training with highly trained and experienced professionals. The courses offered in Hadley, Massachusetts will be conducted May 4th through the 7th. In Spain, the courses are conducted April 20th through the 23rd.

Rushing Rivers Institute very strongly encourages those who are in the river science field and businesses whose plans will impact the surrounded rivers to participate in these events. The world’s waters are at a point of degradation where no human intervention will spell certain disaster. This technology will facilitate those who are working towards change to conduct their research in much more accurate and efficient ways.

Alternative Energy – Ocean Power

In todays climate, finding an alternative to the fossil fuels we depend upon has become an issue of the uppermost importance, from both an environmental point of view and an economic one.

A lesser known alternative energy currently undergoing massive research and development is the generation of energy obtained from the power of the ocean or as its more commonly referred to “Ocean Power”.

The production of energy from the worlds oceans can be achieved in 3 different ways.

  1. Tidal Power: Similar in principal to the production of hydroelectricity via dams, energy can be created by trapping water at high tide and then catching the energy given off when the water rushes out at low tide.
  2. Wave Power: The too and for or up and down movements of waves can be harnessed to form energy, much like wind power. Essentially the movement of waves across something like a turbine or a piston creates energy which is then stored in generators.
  3. Water Temperature: In a process known as Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion, OTEC for short, energy is harvested form the flow of heat between the colder deep areas of the ocean and the warmer surface areas.

Still in its infancy Ocean Power is not very popular at the moment, mainly due to the large amounts of money need to set up infrastructure (ie massive arrays would need to be set up to harvest wave power), but as companies are investing more time into researching alternative energy, ocean power is gaining in popularity and as costs lessen, it looks set to become one of the largest alternative energy sources we will be employing and depending on in our day to day lives.

Rushing Rivers: Intent on Preventing Corruption of Earth’s Rivers

Rushing Rivers Institute is an Environmental Non-Profit organization designed to protect the world’s rivers for both human and natural use. R.R.I. differs from other programs with its ability to fuse its expertise in both ecological and physical sciences into harmonious engineering

Rushing Rivers asserts that protecting our world’s water is an issue that everyone should be behind. Given the situation of rivers is a result of human actions, it falls on us to correct what has been done. Practices such as overfishing, dams and the overuse are of human error and require human solutions.

To combat this, R.R.I. provides many services to the community surrounding our institute as well as nationally. Our team of scientists are experienced in Instream flow studies, fish and invertebrate habitat assessment, watershed and local scale river restoration planning, ecological feasibility studies of dam removal, nature-like fishway design and assessing the implications of global warming on rivers and streams.

Rushing Rivers team members have also created the MesoHABSIM model. This evolution of the PHABSIM model makes for quick assessment of fish communities in long stretches of rivers. With this technology, models are constructed for future planning and projects.

Rushing Rivers also provides both introductor and intermediate training courses on the use and applications of MesoHABSIM. Faculty and students alike will both gain from these sessions.

Community involvement is crucial to not only the world and its water, but to Rushing Rivers’ plan of action. R.R.I. strongly advocates for education and community awareness that starts at the small scale and gradually makes its way worldwide.

This reasoning has lead Rushing Rivers to organize community events and recreational activities focused on inspiring love and appreciation for our waters. Most recently, a canoe trip along the For River was put together by R.R.I. to allow our inquirers a hands-on experience to these pristine bodies of water.

The biggest threat facing our world and especially our water is the global warming. Accordingly, Rivers Climate Action was implemented to thwart this ever-growing phenomenon. Through our comprehensive, scientific work on rivers, coupled with our community activism, we hope to promote awareness and solutions to this problem.

If you wish to further read up on the issue, or choose to help us in our goals, please visit our Rushing Rivers or River Climate Action websites to gain futher information. Please tell your friends family and associates; we are a small, concerted organization and always appreciate any word-of-mouth communication.

Advantages Of Using Paper Bags For Shopping

One might be amazed at the number of uses paper shopping bags provide. From grocery stores to gift shops, they are a mainstay of any retail business and a fixture of everyone’s lives.

How are shopping bags made from paper different from other forms of bags? For one, they are made from paper pulp, and these bags provide many different uses other than carrying shopping purchases.

It was once claimed that paper bags were not friendly to the environment, but till now, they are still widely used. While it is no longer true of the former, paper bags for shopping businesses are still the best practical solution. Having them produced in bulk is incredibly cheap, thus lowering business costs by considerable levels.

Paper bags are also not as environmentally harmful as they are made out to be. They can be recycled, and such costs are also low to society. Environmentalists are warming to the idea of using them now, compared to many years ago.

Paper shopping bags are also a cheap form of self advertising. This stems from the fact that printing on paper is invariably cheaper than on other materials like plastic. This enables businesses to save even more over the long run.

As mentioned, paper bags can be reused time and again. This is partly due to the lightness of such carriers. Shopping bags can be reused for subsequent trips to the supermarket, or for other daily purposes, and do not add to the load one might be carrying each time.

Another key reason why paper shopping bags are environmentally friendly is the biodegradability of the material used. And when unused for a long time, paper will decompose and could actually be used in ecologically positive situations.

It is easy to understand why paper shopping bags are the choice of many. They are the cheapest carriers one can have for any retail business, offer different ways of using them, and contribute to tackling environmental concerns.

Announcing River Climate action from Rushing Rivers Institute

The scientific community has concluded that climate change is a real phenomenon. Even the predictions that are most moderate indicate the Earth warming several degrees Celsius by the year 2100, which is an alarming increase. Of the issues affected by this problem, Rivers are among the most hurt.

In these important bodies of water are fish, the canary in the coal mine of climate change. As a result of global warming, river waters have steadily increased thirty-five to forty degrees over the last several decades. This forces fish normally located in southern waters to migrate north, which causes competition for food.

Similarly, parasites accustomed to warmer areas are having to move northbound as well, infecting fish and other species who are not accustomed to their presence. This spreads quickly to other animals that depend on the fish, such as bears, eagles, and even humans.

Consequently, River Climate Action has been announced by Rushing Rivers Institute. Drawing on their scientific expertise, community relations and belief in educational resources, River Climate Action will call upon a global river authority to take a stand against Global Warming

Several initiatives will be put into place to see this goal. Firstly, a research plan to establish the best recommendations to combat Climate Change. Secondly, an action plan to implement those recommendations. Thirdly, a management network to reach out and coordinate the efforts of other groups.

Apathy is the worst course of action. The time is now to take a stand against a problem that will cause catastrophic problems in the very near future for our children and grandchildren. Educating yourself on the issue is the first step to assisting and remedying the solution.

Rushing Rivers strongly urges you to take the time to review the situation. You can visit our website at http://www.riverclimate.org to read further on the problem. With your help, rectifying the issue will no longer be delayed.

Alternative Energy – Hyrdoelectricity (Hydropower)

Hydroelectricity is produced by the gravitational force created by falling water (this force is referred to as hydropower).

Hydroelectricity is an alternative energy which is perhaps not so alternative. It is the worlds most used form of renewable energy and gives of no direct waste and relatively minuscule amounts of CO2 in comparison to fossil fuels (the CO2 is released during the manufacturing of the power, not directly from hydroelectricity). Currently over 20% of the worlds electricity is derived from Hydroelectricity.

Hydroelectricity does have its down side, the effects on the environment and the economy of constructing and maintaining the massive dams needed to produce sufficient quantities of power is quite destructive.

The act of dam construction, disrupts many ecological factors, mainly harming fish and surrounding lands, not to mention the impact on human life if a dam fails.

Having said this at this stage it remains our most environmentally large scale source of energy yet, although it is renewable, it is dependent on weather conditions as low water levels can lead to low electricity production and as populations continue to increase and our need for power and water use grows, we turn to more and larger dams to satisfy our needs.

Solar Power For The Home

Solar power for the home, is an extremely responsible step for the homeowner to take. Forgetting the savings you stand to make from “living off the grid”, solar power is a much needed energy alternative if we are to help the earth recover or at least not spiral deeper into the environmental mess we find ourselves in.

We out to ourselves and in particular our children to clean up the mess we have caused and take some initiative in our communities by leading the way with energy reform in our homes.

Reduction in energy usage is one thing, but removal of resource depleting, environment polluting fuels totally is the ultimate solution.

Consumers are always going to indulge in excess for their comfort, so it makes sense to promote alternative energy instead of energy restrictions.

One way we can make a massive difference and set an example for future generations is to look seriously at the alternative of solar power for the home.

Solar energy is the cleanest of energies and its a free source which isn’t going to run out for many millions of years, we aren’t mining or harvesting the energy, but catching energy that is being given off that would otherwise be wasted.

There are a number of fantastic do it yourself solar energy kits available these days, so start delving into solar power for the home and do your bit to save the environment.

Alternative Energy – Geothermal Energy

Geothermal Energy is perhaps a lesser known form of energy when we look toward alternative power sources.

What is Geothermal Energy? – its energy stored with in the earth which is created by heat. The word “geothermal” literally translates to “earth heat”. Whilst it was first harvested in the 1904 in Italy, this power source still only supplies about 1% of the worlds energy usage.

Interestingly there are a number of Geothermal resource below the earths surface, ranging from hot water and rocks located miles below the earths surface. As we go down deeper we fund other sources in the form of molten rock (magma) and steam

Advantages of Geothermal Energy:

  1. Whilst not renewable in the true definition of the word, relatively speaking it is. There is such a huge reservoir of heat with in the earth, we would be using so little it would be insignificant.
  2. Once a system has been setup the fuel is free.
  3. Very small (negligible) environment impacting emissions, much cleaner than traditional fossil fuels.
  4. Unlike solar or wind power, geothermal power is not dependent on weather conditions.
  5. Price competitive with fossil fuels and other fuel sources
  6. Scalability, can supply whole city’s, or single households

Disadvantages of Geothermal Energy

  1. Some minor impact on the earth, in terms of drilling and clearing of land.
  2. Inefficient, due to the impact of heat on materials used to harness the energy, allot of heat is lost and must be “cooled down” reducing the amount of energy produced.
  3. Instability produced in the earth near geothermal power plants, most plants will eventually run out of tap able energy and will have to be built at more expense and environmental impact in a new area.
  4. Not yet a suitable solution for individual households, properties.

Whilst the future looks bright, it isn’t really a viable option (at this stage anyway) to implement as a homemade energy system.

A better alternative at this stage is DIY Solar Power, you can read more about it here DIY Solar Power.
