Farooq Abdullah, India’s Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Resources announced that India will be significantly boosting its solar power output by 2013. The increases announced total 1,000 megawatts, 50% of which will be obtained from photovoltaic sources and the other 50% will be derived from projects involving solar thermal.
Longer term India is looking to generate another 20,000 mega watts of solar energy by 2020. Developers have been asked to submit proposals and the government is currently foraging through thousands of applications, from which 100 projects 5 megawatt photovoltaic will be given the go ahead
To get some perspective on the significance of this, 1,000 mega watts is estimated to be enough energy to run 800,000 houses in the US.
